BOLD & BEAUTIFUL BIG BEND

Big Bend National Park, Texas

⛰️ Park History

Big Bend National Park, located in remote West Texas, is a land of dramatic contrasts—towering mountains, desert expanses, and the winding Rio Grande that gives the park its name. The region has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, with ancient peoples leaving behind rock art and tools. Later, it became a crossroads for Native tribes like the Apache and Comanche, and though claimed by Spain and Mexico, it remained largely unsettled due to its harsh terrain.

⛏️ In the early 20th century, ranchers and miners moved in, but it wasn’t until 1944 that Big Bend was designated a national park—Texas’ first. Today, it protects over 800,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert, preserving fossil beds, volcanic remnants, and some of the darkest night skies in the U.S. It’s a place where ancient history, rugged beauty, and international borders converge in one of America’s most remote and awe-inspiring landscapes.

🛫 Where to Stay:

The Gage Hotel, Marathon, Texas

Ready to live your best Texas life? Saddle up at the Gage Hotel—where rustic charm meets upscale comfort. Sure, it’s a bit pricier than your average park stay and a drive away from the park, but the perks are worth the time and penny:

• A cozy restaurant and coffee bar to fuel your adventures

• A sprawling pool that’s a hit with families and couples

• A fireplace made for s’mores, starry-night stories, and building memories

• And the crown jewel—Gage Gardens, a peaceful oasis perfect for unwinding where dogs are welcome

We found that this was just a place to sleep—it’s a destination in itself.

☀️ Weather:

October Magic in Big Bend

If you’re chasing perfect hiking weather, October is your golden ticket. Think low 80s, sunshine galore, barely-there humidity, and a gentle breeze that keeps you cool while you explore. It’s the kind of climate that makes you want to stay outside all day—and you should!

🎒 Packing Essentials:

Before you hit the trails, make sure your pack is adventure-ready. Here’s what we swear by:

• 👟 Hiking shoes & sticks

• 💧 1–2+ liters of water per person per trail

• 🧻 Wet wipes (trust us on this one 🤣)

🥾 Trail Talk

🪨 Balancing Rock Trail (Easy)

This one’s a scenic gem—but getting there is half the adventure! A vehicle with ground clearance is recommended as you navigate rocky, unpaved desert roads (we were driving a RAM truck). Once parked, the trail opens into a sandy creek bed surrounded by majestic rock formations and fluttering wildlife—butterflies, bumble bees, birds, skinks, grasshoppers. The fairly hike is mellow until the final stretch, where you’ll climb up to the iconic Balancing Rock. We loved the beautiful striations in the rocks. Take it slow—it gets windy, the climb up is steep in a few spots, and it is full sun all the way up! Once you make it, you’ll enjoy a surreal view of mother nature’s perfectly balanced red rock… a perfect photo spot!

🏞️ Lost Mine Trail (Moderate)

Paved roads make this trailhead easy to reach, but parking fills fast—arrive early or late. The trail is a steady uphill climb with panoramic views of mountains and colorful rock formations. The higher up you go, the less tree cover… don’t forget a hat and sunglasses!

Keep your eyes peeled for turquoise-feathered Blue Grosbeaks and the occasional tarantula (they’re chill, promise!). The summit opens into a wide plateau with jaw-dropping canyon views—perfect for a family photo or a quiet moment of awe. You may even catch a view of one of the 56 different types of hawks that live in the area… we did!

⛰️ Pinnacles Trail to Emory Peak (Hard)

Ready to level up? This trail starts at the park’s visitor center and winds through lush vegetation, buzzing wildlife, and wildflowers. It’s a relentless uphill trek with switchbacks and steep rock steps.

As you climb, the air gets cooler and the views get better. The summit of Pinnacles is a dream spot for a picnic—but if you’re feeling bold, push on to Emory Peak, the highest point in the park. It’s a tough climb, but the reward is pure magic.

🌎 Investment Ideas:

Big Bend’s wide-open spaces and steady sunshine make it a prime candidate for wind and solar energy projects. With thoughtful planning, this region could help power local communities and feed clean energy back into the grid.

And don’t sleep on Marathon, TX! This charming town could thrive with new farm-to-table restaurants and more vegan/vegetarian options for hungry travelers. It is impeorant that new ventures not only turn a profit, but benefit locals and the environment!
