SPECTACULAR SILVER FALLS

Silver Falls National Park, Oregon

🌎 Geologic History

Silver Falls is not only one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the western United States, but also has a fascinating 15-million-year geological history that explains its unique beauty.

🌋 Volcanic Origins: 6–17 million years ago, ancient lava flows from the Columbia River Basalt Group laid the foundation for the cliffs and ledges that now host Silver Falls’ dramatic cascades. If you pay attention to the riverbeds, you can still see the formations!

🌬️ Erosional Sculpting: Over the next 1–2 million years, Silver Creek erosion carved deep canyons into the basalt, forming the recessed alcoves behind waterfalls like South Falls and North Falls. You will be able to see these formations while hiking the main 10-falls trail.

🧊 Glacial Influence: Over the next 2.6–12 million years, Ice Age meltwater and sediment enriched the landscape, layering volcanic rock with fertile soils that support the park’s lush forest.

🌲 Present-Day Landscape: Today, Silver Falls State Park features 14 waterfalls, lush forests, epic riverbeds, and lava flow formations. The park has over 35 miles of backcountry trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

🏠 Where to Stay

If you are looking for an all-inclusive Airbnb experience, we highly recommend Parker Loop House outside of Silver Falls. This accommodation offers the comfort and convenience of a fully stocked, private home nestled in a local neighborhood just a short drive from the main attraction! It was also a more economical option for our travel group compared to the in-park properties.

🧑🏽‍🍳 Enjoy cooking? The host offers a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, coffee machine with coffee, pots, pans, utensils, a variety of dishware, and nearly anything else you could think of. You and your loved ones can prepare meals together and eat at the kitchen table or spacious coffee bar. We had a blast cooking some new recipes!

🧺🚿 If you are traveling light or plan to get messy on your hiking excursion, this is the place for you! The host also offers a full-sized washer and dryer upstairs, just outside the bedrooms, equipped with washing detergent. Also, the bathrooms are fully stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and soft towels. I really love how the host made everything easy!

The home is within 30 minutes of the local restaurants too! Check it out! https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1389325179809243906?viralityEntryPoint=1&s=76

☀️ Weather

We traveled to the park in early September, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous! You can expect mild, pleasant temperatures, with daytime highs in the low 80s and cool nights in the 50s. If you are planning to hike midday, you may find it helpful to dress in some layers. Our group was quite toasty around 12 o’clock; there was very little cloud or tree cover to cool off. Overall, it is a wonderful time to visit the park.

🥾 Trail Talk

The Trail of Ten Falls is a breathtaking 7.2-mile loop in Silver Falls State Park that showcases ten stunning waterfalls, several of which you can walk behind. We were excited to explore Oregon’s “Crown Jewel!”

From Parker Loop House, we drove to the North Falls Parking Lot and, on the way, passed through the lush Oregon Cascade foothills with towering trees, ferns, mossy rocks, and flowers on winding picturesque roads. The signs to the park were well marked!

We arrived at the North Falls Parking Lot around midday, but all the spots were full! If this happens, no worries… just head down the road another 4 miles to the South Falls Parking Lot to begin your journey!

🅿️ South Falls Lot: This is the main parking area for Silver Falls State Park. Parking is only $5/day, and there’s plenty of overflow parking for standard and large vehicles, RVs, and trailers. There is ADA-accessible parking, restrooms, picnic areas, play areas for children, a café, gift shop, and historic lodge.

🏞️ Top Trail Picks

South Falls

South Falls Loop is our top trail pick! We easily walked from the parking lot to the trailhead in a matter of minutes. The trail is well maintained and marked, with gentle grades suitable for a variety of ages and mobility ranges. Be sure to take your time, as the ground may be wet from rain or air moisture.

In about 5 walking minutes, we were standing at the edge of a 177-ft iconic waterfall plunging off a basalt cliff into a stunning canyon decorated with lava formations at the base. We could feel the waterfall’s mist expanding into the surrounding space, coating the plant life, rocks, and our faces! 😂

It is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments where we felt truly “one” with Mother Nature and thankful to be present. We spent a few minutes quietly appreciating the Lower Falls’ beauty and meditating at the rocks just behind the cascading water.

Lower South Falls

After the South Falls, we walked about another mile to an even more lush, private, natural paradise that enchanted and mesmerized us—the Lower South Falls. This 93-ft beauty cascades across a carved basalt alcove, with many more ferns, mossy rocks, trees, and wildlife flourishing on the waterfall’s edges. The scene felt more intimate and mystical—a perfect setting for nature and wildlife photography.

The descent to Lower Falls includes stone steps and narrow switchbacks, which can be slippery when wet. Be sure to hold on to the railing on your way down and be extra careful when traveling with children and mobility-restricted travelers. Once again, there is a rare opportunity to stand behind the falls and experience the gentle mist on your face. We stopped for another meditative moment here, appreciating nature’s gift.

The good news… if you need a bathroom or picnic break at this point, you can take the Maple Ridge Trail back to the parking lot to access the park’s amenities. The easy accessibility makes this an ideal starting point for your Silver Falls adventure. We definitely plan to lead an excursion there again!

🌲 Challenging Trails

🏃🏻‍♀️ Buck Mountain Loop Trail
The trail is 1.5 miles away from the South Falls Parking Lot, with a total distance of 7 miles. Expect to walk uphill across steep inclines, exposed roots, and occasional rocky sections with less shade than canyon trails. This trail offers more solitude and wildlife sightings, especially deer and wild birds.
If you are a trail runner, this route will offer a cardiovascular challenge and the opportunity to see gorgeous panoramic views!

🌄 Perimeter Trail
Looking for an even more challenging Silver Falls trek? Check out Perimeter Trail, about 2 miles away from the South Falls Parking Lot. The full trail is 8.5 miles one way with sustained elevation changes, narrow paths, and mixed terrain including forest, ridges, and creek crossings. It encircles the park’s outer edge, offering a wilderness feel within a state park. This is ideal for “ruckers,” backpackers, and long-distance hikers.
